Good Big Dogs

Big dogs

Dogs vary in their size and looks. Whether big or small they sure make very good companions. They are loyal and share in our joys and sorrows. There are many types of large dogs that make for great pets. It’s funny how people either really love small dogs or really like big dogs…as if there is no middle. The most popular big dogs are:

Doberman Pinscher: The height of a Doberman Pinscher is usually 25-27 inches and weighs between 30-40 kgs. Its average life span is 11 to 13 years. It is usually black or brown in color and is primarily used as a guard dog.

German Shepherd: A German Shepherd is generally 23-25 inches tall and would weigh anywhere between 34 to 43 kgs. They have a life span of 12 to 14 years. Their colors are usually black/tan, gold or light grey.

St. Bernard: These are really big and tall dogs. Their height is between 24-28 inches and their weight is between 50 to 90 kgs. Their life span is 8 to 10 years. They usually come in brindle/white or orange/white color. They are known for guarding, searching and rescuing.

My personal favorite would be the
Labrador Retriever: They are popularly known as Labs. Their height is between 21-25 inches and weighs 25 to 34 kgs. They are usually light brown or yellowish and black in color. They are known for their companionship qualities.

If you are going to get a nice big dog as a family pet, consider getting one of the ones above. I love all dogs so I have a mixed but the Labradors are great….as are German shepards. In the end, to each their own…dog!

My first Piranhas

My husband and I are total pet lovers. We already have two labs and now we wanted a fish tank. We brought a small tank and set it up with few rocks at the bottom, gravel and plants. We just placed a few as we didn’t want it to look overdone and crowded. We had bought all the requirements for the tank from a local pet store.

After setting up the tank properly with the filter, heater and light we were ready to buy our Piranhas. We purchased two beautiful Piranhas and a few small guppies to put into our tank. We even purchased some earthworms to feed the fishes.

We followed the storekeeper’s instructions step by step and released the fish in the water. Wow!! They looked beautiful with their bright orange color and dark red fins. They were not very big-around 4 inches. They moved so swiftly in the water.

Though everything looked perfectly fine, our Piranhas did not live long. Just for 4 days in our tank. It was really very sad. The guppies though were growing very well.

We later purchased two more Piranhas, the same size and they have now grown to 6 inches. But it’s still a mystery of what went wrong with our first two Piranhas.

Can a Reptile be kept as a pet?

I would never keep a reptile as a pet. The very thought of it is so scary. I get frightened of even watching them on television and imagine having one in your house—-YUK. However, there are a number of people who do keep reptiles as pets. I really wonder how. They say that reptiles are fascinating to watch and have a strange beauty. Really? But I do know for a fact that they are not much preferred because of the dangers associated with some of them.

The most popular reptiles people keep are snakes, lizards, tortoises or turtles. There are different types of snakes and lizards available. You can buy a reptile from a pet store. It’s very important that you check the health of the reptile properly before buying it.

Reptile pet care too, is a difficult issue. The first is to make sure that the environment resembles their natural habitat. Also, it is important to ensure that there is sufficient room to keep them as they grow.
From what I know, feeding reptiles too is a problem as they like eating living animals, worms and insects. How does one manage that? As pet reptiles keep growing, your cost would increase on food and healthcare.
